Eyebrow Waxing

Tired of plucking your eyebrows? Unless you have very sensitive skin, waxing is the alternative to taking tweezers to your lighten your eyebrows. Waxing can be done by a professional, usually for $15 to $25, but you don’t have to be afraid to try this at home. Just follow these essential steps.

The first thing you need to before waxing your eyebrow is to brush the eyebrow into a natural shape. You can use a baby’s toothbrush or a mascara wand, although men can sometimes use a pocket comb. You should stand several feet away from the mirror to make sure the shape you get is really “natural.” Working too close to the mirror can cause you to make your brow too flat or too arched.

The next thing you need to know is just how long you want your eyebrow to be. The most accurate way to do this is to hold a ruler parallel to you nose and level with the inside corner of your eye. This is the critical step in using eyebrow waxing to enhance your appearance.

If your eyes are too far apart, leave a start line (that you don’t wax). If your eyes are too close together, make the gap between the brows wider. Mark the point with a dot.

The next thing to consider is the curve of the eyebrow. You can find the right place to put the highest point of the curve by holding a ruler form the edge of a nostril past the outer edge of your iris (the colored part of your eyes) and up to the eyebrow. In other words, line up the highest point of your brow with the center of your eye. Mark this point with a dot, too.

Once you know how long the brow you be and where it’s highest point should be, you can plot the curve of your eyebrow. This time you don’t need a ruler. Just draw a line of tops to make a smooth arched brow that tapers off slightly at both ends.

Applying the wax. Buy a professional waxing kit. This is a container of wax you can warm up in boiling water and apply with a small spatula (or applicator), and removal strips. Before you start, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Once the wax is warm, use the applicator to apply a thin layer of wax to the growth. Don’t use too much: You don’t want the wax to drip. Apply the wax to the bottom of the brow first. Never wax above the eyebrow, only shape from below. Don’t let the wax dry. Now comes the hard part.  Pull. Ouch!

Once you have completed waxing, any stragglers can be plucked with tweezers. Avoid sunlight, acid facial treatments, and facial makeup for several hours.

Make a mistake? Just use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps. Don’t worry if you make mistakes. Practice makes perfect, and the hair will grow back in a few weeks.
